Volunteer Opportunities Available with the Chappell Hill Historical Society

MUSEUM Docent/Host

The Chappell Hill Historical Society is seeking a Museum Docent/Host.

  • Requires 4-6 hours per month
  • Work a scheduled rotation once a month to keep the museum open on weekends.
  • Greet visitors
  • Enjoy meeting people
  • Answer questions about the history of Chappell Hill (you do not need to be familiar as you will be trained)
  • Promote the museum and its exhibits, special events and education opportunities
  • Report to the Museum Director

Circulating Library Docent/Host

  • Requires 2-3 hours per month
  • Work a scheduled rotation once a month to keep the library open on select days.
  • Greet visitors
  • Enjoy meeting people
  • Answer questions about the history of the library (you do not need to be familiar as you will be trained)
  • Promote the museum and its exhibits, special events and education opportunities
  • Report to the Museum Director and the Library Committee Chairperson

 

Circulating Library Reading Hour @ the Library Reader

  • Requires 1-2 hours per month
  • Work a specified time block, reading to a group of 0-6 year olds
  • Greet kiddos and parents
  • Enjoy meeting people
  • Answer questions about Chappell Hill (you do not need to be familiar as you will be trained)
  • Promote the museum and its exhibits, special events and education opportunities
  • Report to the Museum Director and the Library Committee Chairperson

 

Providence Baptist Church Docent/Host

  • Requires 2-3 hours per month
  • Work a scheduled rotation once a month to keep the church open on select days.
  • Greet visitors
  • Enjoy meeting people
  • Answer questions about the history of the church (you do not need to be familiar as you will be trained)
  • Promote the museum and its exhibits, special events and education opportunities
  • Report to the Museum Director and the PBC Committee Chairperson

Internship Opportunities Available with the Chappell Hill Historical Society

The Chappell Hill Historical Society is pleased to provide learning opportunities to students through its Internship Program. Interns will be matched with CHHS staff and volunteers and given the chance to explore a variety of Society operations.

Internship opportunities are limited and are therefore filled based on availability.

Museum Intern

Description: The Archives and Library intern will gain hands-on experience in processing, cataloging, digitizing, and learning preservation methods for small- to medium-size archival collections.

This opportunity is available to a limited number of students pursuing a history or library science degree with a concentration or interest in archival studies/preservation. An internship/practicum requiring specific criteria for credit can be accommodated.

Essential Duties

  • Learn proper document handling and care.
  • Assist with assessment and organization of documents.
  • Survey and process collections, including creating finding aids.
  • Perform basic preservation including rehousing of materials.
  • Digitize archival materials.
  • Learn proper handling and care of artworks.
  • Assist with organization, installation, and presentation of exhibitions and art-related events.
  • Assist with registration and processing of collections, new acquisitions, and loans.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Desire to pursue career in archives or library, Non-Profit, Business, Education, Real Estate or Museum field.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and with others.
  • Ability to lift 35 lbs.

CHHS internships are offered throughout the year.  The position is on-site and unpaid. This internship may be completed for credit if approved by your program.
